The company relies on a highly secure international infrastructure, with four datacenters located directly within its production facilities.
These four sites are connected via MPLS, with a central datacenter in Switzerland hosting the critical applications.
When Galderma got in touch with the IT Lumberjacks, they had a very specific objective: a complete overhaul of the international WAN network, integrating the specific security requirements of the local sites—particularly their interconnection with Zscaler.
  • The goal & the plan

This overhaul is quite a challenge: 80 office locations to migrate to Fortinet SD-WAN, from existing Juniper environments, and in some cases even ScreenOS, with dual FTTP connectivity at each site.

80 sites, so 80 specific cases to handle, each with its own requirements and local specificities: NAS or local file sharing, local partners connected via VPN…

  • 80 sites were not enough to challenge the IT Lumberjacks, so, icing on the cake, two additional constraints came along to spice things up a little bit more:
  • A high concentration of network traffic toward the two primary sites in Switzerland (two datacenters), for carrier connections.
  • Local breakout for access to outsourced group tools (Office 365) and the Internet.
  • Project Management / Build
To ensure consistency throughout the overhaul, the IT Lumberjacks are going to work in close collaboration with SCRT in Switzerland, which is in charge of the Fortinet baseline configuration.
  • What’s on the agenda?
  • A collaborative approach to writing the configurations, based on an audit of the existing firewall configurations.
  • Integration of Zscaler across all sites, combined with a redesign of the connections to prioritize the closest Zscaler points of presence. This optimization resulted in latency improvements of several hundred milliseconds in some cases.

Once all the migrations were completed and the overhaul validated, the Galderma team took over the RUN, with support from the managed service provider Orange Business Services India.
